What Happens at Orientation

Your New Student Orientation will get you started on the path to success!

After submitting your application, please review your "New Student Checklist" in your .

1. Online orientation

View the online orientation presentation in your "New Student Checklist" that includes information about additional 51社区 resources and what to expect as a 51社区 student.

This online orientation presentation will provide you with important information, including how to navigate your student portal, connect with resources and services to support your success. After the online orientation you will be ready to meet with the Center for New Students for first semester advising.

2. Plan your path

Placement for math and English must be demonstrated to connect with an advisor who will help you choose an Area of Interest and create your first semester educational plan using Degree Works. Schedule your orientation advising appointment in the New Student Checklist located in the My 51社区 Portal.

Be prepared to discuss the following:

  • The Area of Interest you plan to pursue. Still deciding on what you want to study? Check out this or attend a
  • If you are planning on transferring, having a list of the colleges/universities you are considering with you will be helpful
  • You may have previous school experience or credentials that can be transferred to 51社区 to help you reach your academic goals faster. Please submit your AP score, Dual Credit, or other documentation to 51社区 for review. This is an important step during the advising session to plan accordingly. You can learn more about submission on the Transfer Credit from Another College page. (Please note, once official transcripts are received they will be evaluated within 2-3 weeks).
  • Ways we can support you as a new student (e.g., study skills/time management, financial planning).

3. Register for classes

After your orientation advising session, you will register for classes and make payment arrangements. For most students, the first semester of college includes math, English, and Start Smart coursework. We'll show you how to manage everything through and .

4. Books and supplies
