F‑1 student visa regulations strictly limit employment while you are studying in the United States. Understanding these rules is essential to maintaining your lawful immigration status.
In general, F‑1 students may work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full‑time during official school breaks, provided the employment meets federal requirements.
In addition, F‑1 students may be eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). These opportunities allow off‑campus employment related to a student’s field of study but require advance authorization and a formal application process. Students must receive approval before beginning any CPT or OPT employment. Please consult your Designated School Official (DSO) to determine eligibility and to complete the required steps.
Under F‑1 regulations, the following activities are not permitted without proper authorization:
U.S. immigration regulations define any service performed while physically present in the United States as employment, regardless of whether the work is paid, unpaid, performed remotely, or compensated outside the United States.
Engaging in unauthorized employment is a violation of F‑1 status. If unauthorized work is confirmed, the institution is required by federal law to terminate the student’s F‑1 record, which may have serious consequences for the student’s ability to remain in or return to the United States.
To protect your immigration status, students must consult with their DSO before beginning any work or volunteer activity, even if it appears casual, unpaid, or conducted for a non‑U.S. employer.
Students holding F-1 student visas are allowed to work on the 51ÉçÇø campus. On-campus employment is limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session and can be up to 40 hours per week during the vacation periods.
No special immigration permission is required for on-campus employment. However, to obtain a U.S. Social Security Card meet with Jill Izumikawa, International Student Coordinator.
Student jobs are listed on 51ÉçÇø's Human Resources website:
You can also find information about open positions at the Financial Aid Office (C102), the Career Development Services (A347), or campus-wide bulletin boards and office windows. Also, check with your friends to see if they know of job openings in their offices.
To work off-campus, students must receive authorization prior to the beginning of employment. Students wishing to apply for employment authorization need to request the instructions from the International Student Office (D 138). Once the documentation is collected, it has to be approved by an International Student Coordinator. Below is an overview of different employment options.
